If your child is an SK in our class, they will know all about our baking days! Each month, both our Kindergarten classes bring in ingredients and we set up a production line. That production line helps the child to independently move along doing their own scooping and measuring, so that when they are done they have an individual baked good they did all by themselves! 'All by myself' is a good motto for a lot of aspects of our kindergarten program, and the pride and excitement each child shows is well worth the extra efforts. They also learn to read instructions, cement left-to-right progression, and often they will write a procedural letter home telling families about the steps they followed.
This month was our first baking day, and we followed a small group recipe for 6 children. We measured applesauce, cinnamon, and white glue to make a kind of brown, fragrant playdough! We all helped to pat it flat between two sheets of wax paper, and Mrs. Simms rolled it out even flatter. After we chose our favourite Christmas cutout, we put our names near them and used a straw to poke a hole in them. We'll hang them on our Christmas trees where they will smell beautifully for many years! Too bad this recipe is not for eating, but it was a good introduction to the baking production line, which we will start to do more regularly in January.
Thank you to all the parents who sent in ingredients! We are very proud of what we can do on our own.
