In the Fall, we like the children to learn how to investigate materials safely and properly, and to know how to use the tools on their bodies (fingers, mouth, ears, eyes) to explore their world. This will allow us to do a lot of inquiry-based projects over the winter and spring. It's so much fun to do and the rich talking that goes on in the room is fabulous. If we tell them, they might forget. If we let them actually do it, they learn. If we ask them to share what they've learned out loud, then they won't forget!
For our Science Day, we gathered up a lot of fall materials that we've been building and playing with, as well as fall fruits, and got right into finding out about it by taking it apart. Rind, seeds, flesh, stems, branches, cones, magnifying glasses, tweezers- everything has a name and we use the proper name to talk about what we are doing.
Each Friday we also hit a lot of science, technology and arts expectations by planning and executing a lot of edible and nonedible recipes. Look what happens when we combine ingredients! We made Ooblek with Ms. O on Friday! This recipe is one of many from The Ooey Gooey Lady, who has free resources for sensory recipes online.
